Traditional Thai Massage
Mel Ratcliffe BA (Hons), FHT and founder of 'Bare Health'

Traditional Thai Massage is an ancient system of healing with its roots in Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhist spiritual practice. This unique and complete system of yoga therapy combines rhythmic massage, acupressure, gentle twisting, deep stretching and meditation in a flowing and harmonious full body massage. Thai massage releases tension, increases vitality and creates wholeness of mind, body & spirit.
Thai Massage is different from many western forms of massage in that there is no oil used, the therapist uses a mattress on the floor instead of a couch and the client remains completely clothed throughout the session. It is very different from the 'massage' that we are all so familiar with and often described as 'Lazy Man's Yoga'.

This treatment is the perfect complement to any exercise routine and is suitable for clients of all ages and abilities, the routine can be varied to suit a wide range of physical needs and can be used as a form of physical therapy to aid in the increase of motion and muscular strength.

She also uses a Japanese system of Painless 'Spinal Touch' in combination with Acupuncture and has achieved great results with the combined use of these treatments.

We behave in a way we believe ourselves to be

‘We behave in a way we believe ourselves to be'
By Lisa Barlow

Just suppose this was a truth? We behave in a way we believe ourselves to be. Who are you? What do you stand for? Take a little time to consider these questions and write down the values you currently stand for, or would like to stand for. Commit to living these values every day. If you do I believe you will feel a sense of both fulfilment and contentment. You can not fool yourself. If you BELIEVE yourself to be a compassionate person but are BEHAVING in ways which suggest you’re not you will notice some tension or anxiety. Something will have to change. Either you will have to change your behaviour to become more compassionate or you will have to change your belief that you are a compassionate person. Something is wrong with the picture and you will need to restore balance. When the inner and the outer match it is my belief we find inner peace. Become aware of when you use ‘I’m’ for what follows is an identity statement, it’s how you believe yourself to be.  Our values and beliefs can and do change depending on our life circumstances and that’s OK too but never underestimate the power of our minds to dictate how our lives play out. Decide who you want to be and bring it into the world.

Challenge of the week: Work out your top 5 values and commit for one week to bringing those values into physical manifestation through your words and actions.

Just notice when a behaviour goes against a belief you hold about yourself. Don’t do anything else, just notice whether there is a change in how you feel. Is there a difference when you’re being congruent and when you’re not?

Once you become aware it is my belief that you can make any changes necessary to live a more contented existence. Have a go..........see what you find.

New Year Encouragement

New Year Encouragement

By Sarah Rhodes

Well, here we are, a couple of weeks in to a new year and I’m willing to bet that many of you made  resolutions to eat more healthily, lose weight, get fitter, stop smoking .....The list is endless! So, how are you getting on? Are you still motivated? Or have you changed, modified or even given up already?
Wherever you are in your New Year achievements, here are some tips to help things along...

Revisit your original resolution
          Is it phrased positively?
Instead of ‘losing’ weight, how about becoming slimmer; instead of ‘stopping‘ smoking how about becoming a non-smoker. Small changes in language can have a significant effect on your motivation.  Instead of focusing on what you’re missing out on, it re-focuses on what you are going to achieve.

Is your resolution SMART?
Specific Make your goal specific rather than too general. This means the goal is clear and unambiguous;  ‘I want to fit in to a size X’ is specific, whereas ‘I want to be slimmer’ is general. You could slim down by only 1 or 2 pounds and technically you have achieved the general ‘I want to be slimmer’ which is fine if that is all you wanted but most people with a weight goal want to slim down by considerably more than that!
Measurable It is important to have an indicator of progress towards your goal.  It’s very easy to forget where you started and therefore how much you have achieved if you don’t have some sort of measure. Record where your starting point is, for example, how long does it take you to run/walk a mile, then regularly measure your progress.  Depending on your goal you may want weekly/fortnightly or maybe monthly measures to check your progress. This can help enormously with motivation as you see small steps to your goal so you know you are heading in the right direction!
Achievable Goals, whilst challenging, must be achievable. If you set a goal to lose 2stone in a week  it is unlikely, not to mention very unhealthy, that you will achieve that. You can still have an overall goal of 2 stone but set mini goals of 1-2 lb a week. This is not only achievable but also a very healthy and sustainable way to slim down.
Realistic/Relevant Your goal must be realistic. Similar to achievable, there is no point in setting a goal to be a premiership footballer if you are already 40yrs old and have never played professionally! It isn’t realistically going to happen. So have a look at your resolution, is it actually possible? Another unrealistic example would be resolving to never eat chocolate again even though it’s your favourite food this could be difficult to stick to. Instead you could opt for something more realistic, such as only having one small bar a week.

Goals should also be relevant to you. Why is this goal important to you? What will it give you?  If you can’t think of an answer to those questions you are unlikely to stick at it as what’s the point?!
Time-bound It is good to have a target date for achieving your goal. A commitment to a deadline helps you to focus your efforts. You could link it to an event to help your motivation.  A friend’s wedding or a holiday are good motivators to slim down and tone up. Training for a 5k charity run in 9 months time is a good target too. Again make sure the timescales you’re aiming for are realistic and achievable. It can also help to set small, short term goals, what can I achieve in a week? What can I achieve in a month? What can I achieve in 6 months? And celebrate each milestone with an appropriate reward, there is no point in rewarding yourself with a big cream cake if you’ve met your monthly weight loss target, why not treat yourself to a massage instead.

Stay Positive and Be Your Own Best Supporter
If you have a lapse it doesn’t mean you’ve failed, focus on what you have achieved so far, the chances are you aren’t back at square one so pick yourself up and carry on. Notice the successes, however small.  Encourage yourself and do your best each day.

Get Plenty of Sleep
If you are sleep deprived, your resolve will not be as strong and you won’t have as much energy to stay motivated
Enjoy It!
Make it fun, do it with a friend, give yourself things to look forward to every step of the way.
Stick With It!
It takes approximately 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and about 6 months for it to become part of your personality.

Remember a resolution can be made at any time of year so if you feel you have lost momentum, just start again!

If you feel you need some extra support, I can help you.  My name is Sarah Rhodes and I am a Hypnotherapist based at Bare Health in Congleton.  I work with both Hypnotherapy and NLP to promote wellbeing and personal development using positive messages and experiences.  My goal is to empower you so that you may access, and draw on, your own resourcefulness to enable you to achieve your goal and be the best you can be.

"An invigorating yet relaxing massage, what a wonderful experience for my tired, aching legs and feet after a long day of Christmas shopping. As a runner, I also found this treatment to be of great benefit, especially the calf massage which helped relieve muscle tension and disperse some of those painful knots. This treatment is unlike anything i've had before. I would highly recommend it and sue is a true professional. I will be back for more"                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Lisa B.

The Benefits of Mindfulness

The Benefits of Mindfulness
By Lisa Barlow

Mindfulness is defined by some as being attentive and aware, non-judgmentally.  For me it is about absorbing yourself fully in the present moment with all your senses. It’s about paying attention, giving full attention to the here and now. This means neither worrying about the future nor playing over and over mental tapes from the past. Having come from a place where this kind of thinking was the norm I find concentrating on my breathing, the basic inhale and exhale helps me to get into a more relaxed, mindful state.  Accepted, it is easier to do when you are not in a stressful situation and are alone so it’s perhaps best to practice first where you won’t be disturbed. Breathing deep into the belly also helps. Lying on your back, place your hand gently on your belly and feel your stomach move out with the inhale and in with the exhale.  Try and breathe through your nose only.  Yoga and meditation groups can help you with this if you are struggling.

Becoming more mindful helps us to start exploring our thoughts in more detail and uncover unconscious tapes we play over and over.  Some are helpful for our lives, some aren’t.  It’s up to us to uncover them and then decide whether they are still fit for purpose and useful for our lives as they stand today.

Often, we have developed strategies and responses that may have helped us as a child or young adult but could be causing us problems now! Before we respond to triggers (what people say or do, or situations that remind us of things from the past) it is helpful to become mindful of our thoughts to the trigger before responding with words and actions.

Through understanding and clarity of our own minds we can start to have more compassion with ourselves and others.  Whatever comes from another person is their stuff, as our stuff is ours. We’re just trying to interact with each other the best way we can, bearing in mind we will all have different perceptions on the ‘truth’ based on what we have heard or seen.  Communication is complex!!

Becoming aware of the words you use in your conversations, the intent behind them (your hidden motivations, if any), the tone you use and the body language you display can help to avoid misunderstandings that can lead to arguments and conflict. Becoming more mindful of thoughts, words and actions requires effort but I know from personal experience that all your relationships will benefit from some self exploration and taking the time to SLOW DOWN.  Please take the time to truly smell the roses, this time will come just once, experience it fully. I have learned that our inner worlds can be whatever we want them to be, regardless of what is going on around us.
