Remedy of the week - Arnica

Often described the number one remedy in your First Aid cabinet Arnica has many uses.  Ever done too much gardening and found yourself so stiff the following day, you struggle to get out of bed?  Or begun a new regime of exercise and been put off by the aches and pains you suffer afterwards?  Then try Arnica.  A single dose of Arnica 30c after exercise or strenuous activity can help reduce the effects of lactic acid build up in those tired muscles.

If you are still stiff and sore the following day, then take another one or two doses through the day and it will provide some  welcome relief  and get you moving easily again.

Arnica comes from a wild flower that grows in the Swiss Alps.  It was recognised for centuries by herbalists as a wonderful aid to help heal the injuries and shock of people suffering falls in the mountains.  Prepared homeopathically it boosts the body’s own energy system to heal after all types of accident and injury.  Someone in an ‘Arnica state’ will often say they are okay and not want to be touched (yet clearly they are not).   In those situations give a dose of Arnica 30c, ensuring they also receive the correct first aid treatment.  It will help greatly to reduce the effects of shock.

Remember Arnica for all types of bruising or sprains.  It will typically help when someone may have had a fall and feels ‘bruised all over’.  At the site of visible bruising, it helps to relieve the soreness.   Arnica can be used as a cream, applied directly to the skin or internally in pillule form.  Though always take care never to apply Arnica cream where the skin has been broken.

Arnica is a remedy often given before and after surgery or dental treatment to accelerate the recovery and healing.  Do discuss with your local homeopath to help you to decide the most appropriate dosage.  It is a remedy with many applications and a great friend to have around in times of need.

For general queries or acute advice I will be available at Bare Health on the second Saturday of each month from 10am to 1pm.  You are welcome to drop in or book a free advice session in advance.  Call Bare Health on 01260 408413.

Remedy of the week - Aconite

Homeopathy Remedy of the Week - Aconite – Chilling shock and fear!

Ever been out watching a game on the local sports field and felt a cold biting wind?  Or walked the children to school in a cold wind that has chilled you so much you thought you would never feel warm again?  There has been similar weather in the last week.  For some people getting so cold can lead to starting with all types of inflammation such as a cold, flu, earache, sore throat or cough.  In those situations remember Aconite.  It is a good acute remedy to use when symptoms of inflammation are just beginning.

A key word associated with Aconite is shock.  In the case of physical ailments a severe chilling from a cold, dry wind can shock the body and cause you to become more susceptible to infections.  At the first signs of fever or inflammation take a 30c dose and repeat every 2 hours for the first 1 to 2 days as required.  If Aconite matches your symptoms they are likely to improve within the first 24 hours.

Similarly a severe shock or accident that leaves the person feeling fearful and extremely restless can indicate a need for Aconite.  The fear is likely to be out of proportion showing signs of panic attack or trembling with palpitations and tingling sensations.  In these circumstances give one dose of 30c while arranging any necessary medical help that is required.  Repeat the dose if the fear and restlessness returns.

Some homeopaths also recommend a dose of Aconite 30c before visiting the dentist when there is a great deal of fear and panic felt in anticipation.

Remember to match the symptoms carefully to the best homeopathic remedy picture you can find.  Begin with one dose.  If you feel immediately better, there is no need to repeat unless the same symptoms return.  For acute illnesses use 30c potency or lower.  If symptoms persist without change then consult your local homeopath.

For general queries or acute advice I will be available at Bare Health this Saturday 9th February from 10am to 1pm.  You are welcome to drop in.  I will be available in the shop on the second Saturday of each month.

Homeopathy Remedy of the Week - Sulphur to pick you up!

If you have been one of the many people around the country who have suffered with the latest winter bug and viruses then you may have been left with some symptoms that do not go away.  I am a great believer in allowing winter colds and viruses to run their course, seeing them as good detox for the body.  But some viruses can be difficult to shake off.  If you have been left with a raw throat or a persistent tickly cough then consider taking a few doses of Sulphur 30c.  It is a good remedy for clearing up an illness and giving your energy system a boost to get back to good health.

People needing this remedy will always feel better in the fresh air and worse in stuffy rooms.  Sulphur symptoms are typically worse for heat and exhibit redness, such as a flushed face, rash or sore throat.  It can also help clear up smelly catarrh and red inflamed eyes.

Do beware of taking the remedy in acute situations if the person has chronic eczema without seeking advice from your local homeopath first.   It is the number one skin remedy for rashes or eczema such as nappy rash symptoms with lots of redness.  The baby will show signs of being worse for bathing and heat, but the skin will feel better for being exposed to the fresh air.

Sulphur has many uses in acute situations.  While cravings in pregnancy are quite normal, sometimes they can become a problem.  For a woman who has excessive cravings for sugar, sweet foods, as well as fats and butter then taking Sulphur 6c, three times a day can bring some balance.

Other uses include excessive perspiration which feels offensive as well as indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea and piles.  Though do not just prescribe on the condition.  Always remember to match the symptoms carefully to the best homeopathic symptom picture you can find.  Begin with one dose.  If you feel immediately better, there is no need to repeat unless the same symptoms return.  For acute illnesses use 30c potency or lower.  If symptoms persist for more than 2 to 3 days without change then do consult your local homeopath.

For general queries or acute advice I will be available at Bare Health on Saturday 9th February from 10am to 1pm.  You are welcome to drop in or book a free advice session in advance.  Call Bare Health on 01260 408413.

Why it’s so important to “Eat Your Greens”

How often as children are we reminded at the dinner table to “Eat Your Greens!” quickly followed by “They’re good for you!” And more often than not we turn up our noses in distaste replying “But, do we have to.....” However, when it comes to optimising our health the many benefits that can be obtained from the inclusion of Green Foods into our diets should not be overlooked.

A diet lacking in fresh whole foods consisting mainly of convenience foods with little nutritional value is unbalanced, to achieve a balanced diet it is important to eat whole foods and especially Green foods which will alkalise, cleanse and re balance a body that has become too acidic from over consumption of too many, sugary, fatty processed foods leading to numerous health problems.

Natures Greens such as fruit and vegetables are amongst the most nutrient rich foods in the world providing a wide range of vitamins and minerals. These foods also add fibre to your diet which is known to help in the prevention of numerous diseases. So what are the top greens to add to your diet?

Try including Broccoli, Kale, Spinach, Watercress, Swiss Chard, Kiwi, Avocado, celery and green cabbage to your diet regularly to obtain essential nutrients such as Iron, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium,Vitamins A,C and folic acid. There are lots of tasty recipes available that use these foods, not only can they be used as a side dish with your meals but also in vegetable Juices & smoothies and during the winter – soups and casseroles. So next time you visit your local supermarket don’t by pass the Fresh produce aisle, have a look to see what’s available and try something healthy & different. Provide your body with the nutritious foods it needs to keep you on top form!

But what if you’re always on the go and need a quick way to increase your intake of Green Superfoods? Another way of getting your greens and still obtaining the benefits is to take Green Supplements like Chlorella or Spirulina. Chlorella is a type of green algae grown in fresh water whilst Spirulina is a type of Blue-Green Algae grown in Saltwater lakes. One of the main traits of Spirulina is its high protein content,50 -70% protein by weight & contains all the amino acids essential to the body whilst also being highly digestible & efficiently used by the body. It is one of the most nutrient packed foods on the planet and more and more people are now choosing to include it in their daily diet. Not only is it renowned for its high protein content but also includes B Vitamins, especially B12  (it has four times the B12 as raw liver!), Vitamin K, Iodine & minerals such as Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, potassium & zinc, Essential Fatty Acids and is one of the best known sources of GLA.

Research into spirulina is well documented and highlights its potential in the prevention and treatment of many health conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke, reduction in arthritic symptoms, strengthening Immune defences, nutritional deficiencies such as anaemia, Supporting Liver Health and decreased damage from heavy metal exposure.
Chlorella, has many similarities to Spirulina and again offers many health benefits. It is a single cell green algae, discovered at the end of the 19th Century when it was named after “Chlor” which means “Green” in Greek and “Ella” which means “a small thing” in Latin. Chlorella is a nutrient rich whole food with a concentration of nutritional components such as vitamins & antioxidants including beta carotene, iron, chlorophyll, B12, Vitamin D, Folic Acid, Nucleic Acids & Chlorella Growth Factor. Like Spirulina, Chlorella is one of the most scientifically researched foods and has many health benefits. It is claimed that thousands of people in Japan incorporate Chlorella into their daily diet. In comparison to Spirulina it contains 5X more chlorophyll, the green pigment found in plants. It has been known to aid health by helping probiotic growth, it is great for digestive health with lots of IBS sufferers finding benefit from taking it. Fantastic for energy levels and great for sports as the body utilises the nutrients easily. It’s wonderful for the Skin too – it alkalises the system so that skin issues that are related to digestive problems can be helped and finally – its balancing, suitable for virtually everyone, aids weight management, skin, energy levels, digestion and is a gentle detox.

Need a New Year Resolution Boost?

It’s that time of year again, when the best intended New Years’ resolutions start to waver!

We all start the New Year with a determined attitude to do something different, lose weight, get fit, stop smoking etc.  Yet, after a month of cold, wet, snowy weather, dark nights and not much lighter days, that resolve may be fading and ‘New Year, New Start’ doesn’t quite inspire you in the same way.
Well, here are a few tips to get you back on track:

Revisit your original resolution    – Is it realistic?
For instance, resolving to never eat chocolate again even though it’s your favourite food could be difficult to stick to. Instead opt for something more achievable, such as only having one small bar a week.

Stay Positive and Be Your Own Best Supporter
                                – If you have a lapse it doesn't mean you've failed, focus on what you have achieved so far, notice the successes, however small.  Encourage yourself and do your best each day.

Get Plenty of Sleep                        – if you are sleep deprived, your resolve will not be as strong and you won’t have as much energy to stay motivated

Stick With It!                                     - It takes approximately 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and about 6 months for it to become part of your personality.

Remember a resolution can be made at any time of year so if you feel you have lost momentum, just start again!

If you feel you need some extra support, I can help you. My name is Sarah Rhodes and I am a Hypnotherapist based at Bare Health in Congleton.  I work with both Hypnotherapy and NLP to promote well-being and personal development using positive messages and experiences.  My goal is to empower you so that you may access, and draw on, your own resourcefulness to enable you to achieve your goal and be the best you can be.
